Tyros of county Arcadia in Peloponnese
Our 3rd city break for this summer was at Tyros of Arcadia in Peloponnese (after Poros and Kymi) on 30th &31st of July and 1st&2nd of August. It is only 2,5h-3h away from Athens and we love-love-loooved it.
The municipality of South Kynouria, where Tyros belongs, has about 10.000 residents. It is one of the oldest naval states of the Peloponnese, because it was one of the ports of ancient Sparta during prehistoric times. God Apollon was the honorary god who was worshiped at this area. Furthermore, Tyros belongs to the area of historic Tsakonia where their unique Tsakonian dialect is still spoken.
Tyros is 180 km from Athens (71km from Tripoli, 70km from Argos, 20km from Leonidio which is the center of the municipality, 30km from Astros and 14naval miles from island of Spetses).
Pausanias, a Greek traveler and geographer of 2nd century mentions the beach of Tyros as a fine «hairdo with port».
In my opinion, Tyros is a peaceful place that helps you to relax. A serenity hovers in the atmosphere urges you to rest. Even though it considers a suitable place for families with kids, couples and friends can also relax.
At Tyros, we stayed near the port. Not at the mountain. There is a coastal road that gathers hotels, taverns and patisseries.
The hotel was clean. All personnel were really friendly, helpful and communicative. In addition to that it has a spectacular view of the sea from the terrace. At the terrace, there is also a jacuzzi for 2, so you have to reserve it (with the receptionist). I love-love-looved the fresh Greek breakfast with the salty olive paste upon a buttered freshly baked bread.
The nearest beach is 10 meters and they even had sunbeds for all hotel’s customers. Additionally, it is within walking distance to all taverns and patisseries.
Bonus: It is even within walking distance to the other beaches as well.
I can list only two minus. If you are looking for high speed Wi-Fi, you will be disappointed. Actually, I didn’t care about that, but I did care about the really small shower-bathroom. The shower was extremely small without proper dividers. Consequently, all the water fell out of the shower creating a lake that did not leave from the bathroom floor until the next morning when the maid was entering to clean the room. Maybe, I had to imagine it when I did not see photos of the bathroom at booking.com.
In Greece we have a saying: «the sufferings become lessons». Whereat, next time I will check better all photos from the hotels.
But, we still had a wonderful time at the village of Tyros and we are thinking to come back again soon with friends. The whole atmosphere compensated us and gave us happiness and calmness.
PS: If you want to seat on your balcony or at the teracce (it is open until 00:00) during night, please do not forget to take with you something like this: mosquito repellent. And they also have a collection of books at your disposal on their library.
Even though the area considers to be appropriate for families with kids, the nearest beaches are paved with pebble stones. Paralia-beach of Tyros, Tigani beach (Porto Fino, Golden, Zorbas) and impassable road to small beach Zaritsi (left photo) and Saint Christoforos. That is to say that these emerald waters are crystal clear in that way at all times.
We loved Porto Fino, because it has many options for drinks (refreshments and alcoholic ones) and limited food options (sandwiches, pasta salad, tsipouro platter selection, Greek salad, ice cream). We loved the music and the quick and polite serving. It is positive that the sunbeds were free of charge with a minimum consumption of 7euros.
Moreover, it is closer to the lovers’ cave and you can swim until there. Really sorry I do not have photos from inside the cave. I was so afraid that I will drop my phone to the sea from the canoe kayak and I didn’t take it with me.
Furthermore, from over there you can clearly see the remains of the stone base of the staircase of the old gravity mine.
On the other side of Tigani beach is Zorbas, where you must pay 4euros for each sunbed/hammock. At this price you have for free some toys for the kids. These are life jackets, arm floats, foam swimming pipes, inflatable lifebuoy-roll in funny shapes like fish or flamingos, canoe kayak and polo net. Also, they can bring you whatever you want from Jimmy’s pizza (pizza, souvlaki, beer, orange juice etc.), but you need cash for that.
At the end of the beach (next to Zorbas) you can rent sea pedal boats or small boats.
At this trip we didn’t feel ‘fishy’, so we ate lots of meat, instead of seafood. Afterall, we weren’t on an island.
A fishtavern at the beach with the juiciest steak I ate at this village. Nice cooking from nice people with quick service next to the waves. Bonus: value for money.
Hot spicy bougiourdi feta cheese and pork and calf steak. Furthermore, they have the nicest fried eggplants with gruyere cheese (not greasy at all). The personnel were cheerful and helpful. Bonus: All tables are on the pebble stones of the beach.
They had juicy burger patties and well-cooked schnitzel accompanied with Greek salad and tsipouro Tsilili. The staff was cordial, quick at serving and well trained. Bonus: At the end, they offered us the fluffiest ravani dessert with semolina.
We ate the softest zucchini pie and their moist eggplant pie with tzatziki dip. I felt like these pies were a comfort food making from my mum. Continuing, we licked our fingers after the nicest lamb chops starring at the sea. After that, we ate their sweet carob pie. It was my first time and I loved it. At the end, they offered us watermelon and their own honeyed wine liquor with arbaroriza. I highly recommend it because of the delicious food, the exquisite hospitality of these happy people and because of the nice view of the Tyros gulf.
Bonus: The cool breeze of the mountain and the sea view.
PS: Over there you will find oil-made soap with lavender scent, various of herbs, fresh eggs, olive oil, honey and of course carob.
On our first day at Tyros, we sat at Sweet Cookies (Efstathiou Ioannis) (Ευσταθίου Γ.Ιωάννης, Ταγματάρχου Αλευρά, ΤΚ 22300) at the beach of Tyros. And we thrilled because of the freshness of the sweets. So, we sat also all the next few days. Whatever we ate were extremely fresh, so no need to try something else.
We ate kantaifi, ice cream, Bueno cream, vanilla cream, confectionery with cheesecake filling and mooooore ice cream.
You must try the freshness of the sweets and the enslave-the-heart politeness of the personnel. He (Giannis) was so kind to refill our water bottle with cold water every time we were drinking it all, because he understood his customer’s need, since we ate so many sweets.
Of course, there are few other sweet shops and most of the coffee places are offering also sweets like orange pie, honey balls and chocolate pie.
There are many things to do in Tyros, if you are feeling energetic. Besides water sports, you can go hiking to see the old gravity mine or the 3 windmills from 1920’s that dominate the hill above the Tyros’ harbor. Also, you can go fishing, climbing, visiting the Monasteries (like Monastery Eloni +3027570 22297) or to observe and participate to olive oil and wine production workshops.
Moreover, you can explore all these caves at the area (near the sea or at the mountain). In the Paleochora plateau of Tyros, at an altitude of 690m, is the cave abyss – sinkhole Dersios known since antiquity which in recent years has been explored by foreign and Greek speleologists.
Furthermore, if you are at Tyros during July, do not miss the interactive festival of extroversion and art with aqua yoga, soap workshops, jazz concerts etc. (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Since Tyros does not have a museum, all the historic findings are at the museum of Sparta, Tripoli, Astros. There are also few more at the Benaki Museum in Athens and as well in the Louvre museum of Paris. ***
In short, the air in Tyros smells like sunscreen lotion and sea salt. I am sure that this will force you to rest yourselves. And these messy hair and the tanned skin, it definitely belongs to Tyros beach. Greece’s beaches are a paradise on earth. So, do not delay yourselves. We are expecting you in Greece.!.!.!
